Quoted from Lewis F. Rutz (Charles Rutz's grandson) in 1979:

Charles F. Rutz came from Germany in 1855. His first wife's name is unknown to me at this point and she was also from Germany. When they came they had two children both born in Germany. William was born January 15, 1848 and Augusta born in 1850.

His wife died on the trip and was either buried at sea or somewhere along the Mississippi or Missouri Rivers. Some of the family said that his wife was buried at sea and others say she died between St. Louis and Hermann, Missouri. The story also goes that the boat sank in the Missouri River and Charley and another passenger swam to shore with the two children. I have never researched a boat sinking at Hermann in 1855, but it might be interesting to check out some day.

While at Hermann, Missouri he left his daughter (Augusta) with a family who moved away and they left her with the family of John Adam Sengenberger who adopted her. She married F. Louis Kielmann on October 7, 1872. Mr Kielmann was one of the founders of Hermann.

Charley moved south of Hermann to Gasconade County where at one time he owned land along the Burboise River. He met and married Mary Ann Reed . He later owned a farm along Red Oak Creek and finally along Brush Creek in the very northern part of Crawford County.

Kay, thanks for the additional info on Charlie. So you know, I saw a census record for Augusta that listed her father's (Charlie's) birthplace as Pommern. I assume that her adoptive parents (the Sengenbergers) must have told her where Charlie was born.

I have been to the cemetery in Hermann many times, and for years I was able to locate only Augusta's marker but not her husband Louis Kielmann's. Last Summer, I finally found them both. I will send you the photos via email. The markers are not located very close to each other.

Auguste a variant of Augusta (Latin)
The meaning of Augusta is "great, magnificent".

Hermine is a feminine form of Herman.
Herman is of Old High German origin, and means "soldier".

F. Louis Kielmann, harness dealer of Hermann, was born in St. Louis, Mo., June 10, 1845. His father, John W. Kielmann (deceased), was a native of Wurtemberg, Germany, and came to the United States in 1831, residing in Philadelphia, Penn., until 1839, when he came to St. Louis thence to Hermann in 1841. From 1843 till 1847 he resided in St. Louis but after that time made his home in Hermann, Mo. He was one of the founders of Hermann. F. Louis was educated in both English and German in Hermann, and when a young man learned the saddle and harness maker's trade, but has not followed that occupation all the time. He was post- master of Hermann from 1866 to 1881, and at the latter date established his present business. He was a member of the town trustees and also a member of the school board for some time.

On October 7, 1872, he wedded Augusta Sengenberger, the adopted daughter of John Adam Sengenberger. Her father was William Rutz.
note from Owen Rutz:     the article is mistaken. Augusta's biological father's name was Charles Franklin Rutz a.k.a. Carl Ruthz. Her biological mother's name was Caroline.
Mr. and Mrs. Kielmann became the parents of six children: John William, F. Louis, Augusta D., L. Amelia, Julia and Malvina.
